The Ethics of Collaboration and Referrals with Sheila Addison

1-4pm ET/10am-1pm PT

Sexuality professionals often encounter consumers who would benefit from the services of more than one type of provider in addressing their concerns and needs. Discipline-specific training often develops professional expertise in one’s practice area while neglecting information about others’ specialities, and may even create misunderstandings about how other providers operate. Both licensed/regulated and unlicensed/unregulated professionals lack information about the skills and services offered by other types of practitioners, and the guidelines each profession uses to determine ethical and responsible practices. Skills and knowledge for effective collaboration are often left to the professional to develop on their own in the course of their practice. This can result in a lack of clarity about areas of responsibility, the goals for treatment, and appropriate boundaries around treatment subsystems. This presentation will rely on the AASECT Code of Conduct and other professional guidelines to show how sexual health professionals can collaborate ethically and effectively to promote consumer welfare. Bring your questions about how to make the most of interprofessional collaboration and professional referrals!

Learning objectives include:

  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to identify ethical and professional

issues that should be attended to when collaborating with other professionals.

  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to describe multiple models of

collaboration with other professionals providing different modalities of care.

  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to apply principles from the AASECT

Code of Conduct and other relevant professional guidelines to help guide decision-making when

    collaborating with other professionals.
